Kannimara Teak (Gentle Giant) is one of the world’s largest living teak trees found in Parambikulam Tiger Reserve.According to the local tribal belief when people tried to cut down this tree, blood started oozing out from the cuts on the trunk. Since then this tree has been worshipped by the local tribals in Parambikulam as ‘Virgin Tree.’ The name Kannimara was given to this tree as ‘kanni’ means ‘virgin’. This tree has also been awarded ‘Mahavriksha Puruskar’ by the Government of India during 1994-95.
India also has a teak tree museum in a small district named ‘Nilambur’ in Kerala.
